Volkswagen produces one million electric cars at former Trabant factory

Volkswagen has officially reached the milestone of one million electric cars produced. The anniversary model is the ID.3 GTX Performance assembled at the Zwickau plant.

The German automotive giant is marking an important milestone in its history. Six years ago, Volkswagen began production of its first fully electric model, the ID.3.

Now, halfway through the decade, the Wolfsburg-based brand has just reached the milestone of one million electric cars produced.

The car that helped Volkswagen reach this milestone is actually the ID.3 GTX Performance, the most powerful version of the entry-level electric model. The millionth copy is painted in Kings Red shade and left the Volkswagen factory in Zwickau. This copy will be delivered to the customer in Bavaria.

Production of the electric ID.3 model started in Zwickau at the beginning of November 2019, and Volkswagen has been producing only electric cars here since 2020. The last model with an internal combustion engine was produced in this same factory at the end of June of that same year. Last year, the Volkswagen factory produced 204,000 electric vehicles.

Since 1990, when Volkswagen took over the keys to the VEB Sachsenring plant, which produced the Trabant for decades, more than seven million cars have been produced. Six models for three different Group brands are currently produced here: the Volkswagen ID.3, Volkswagen ID.4, Volkswagen ID.5, Audi Q4 e-tron, Audi Q4 Sportback e-tron and Cupra Born.
